| Distinction between workflow and process flow in plain English please? | Technical | I've been trawling for a definitive difference between workflows and process flows. Really need it in plain English, e.g. Process flows have this feature, Workflows don't and vice-versa. | As I see it:
A workflow is a process flow, but not necessarily the other way around. With workflows you try to restrict what is and is not an allowed process flow. For instance, because you are modeling a unit of work, you usually usually want to define a definitive "completed" state in a workflow. Another example: you might want to build your workflow only using higher-level constructs such as forks/joins (and/or splits), etc. There are (non-workflow) processes which cannot be modelled this way. But this is a Good Thing: you are restricting your class of processes and this makes it easier to analyse and reason about them. HTH - Jelle. |
| Grafical Process Models | Feature Request | Why don't you display the processes as an grafical image on the wiki sites (so I have to download the xdpl to view, , would be nicer to have a direct visual representation of the process) ? | Hi, actually, we do! but our service is down for the moment. We are extremely busy and we have not had time to fix our "image" service. Thanks for your comment, we'll try to bring this service up again a.s.a.p. |
| How can I search for a process with specific characteristics. | Usage | I would like to search for a process with specific characteristics. For example all process in which the CFO is involved. Is this possible. | If you go to our search section (http://wiki.process.io/article/SearchAProcess - can also be found on the left hand side of your screen under 'Get Started') you will find several options to search for processes. To do a comprehensive search we would suggest to use the 'Search with (comprehensive) query' link (http://wiki.process.io/article/Special:QueryInterface). |
| I want to contribute to the wiki, but my flows are not in XPDL format. | Usage | I would like to contribute to the wiki. However my business process flows are not in XPDL (but in Visio) and I don't have time to translate them to XPDL. Is it for me possible to still contribute the flows to the wiki. | You can use the following form to upload your process flows which are not in XPDL format: http://wiki.process.io/article/Form:ProcessNotXPDL
Of course we encourage everybody to upload XPDL files because by doing so other users can easily improve the submitted flows. If you see a model which is not in XPDL and you want to contribute to the wiki, we encourage you to make an XPDL-variant of the model and upload it to the wiki. |

| Industry Category | Feature Request | I was wondering If you are adding some Industrial Category to your processes. I know most of the process maybe general (any industry can use them). Maybe it is not your purpose. But it maybe can help people to see which procees they can use based on the industry they are working for. | Thanks for submitting your question. We already took the industry focus into account. If you take a look at the process "Develop understanding of the industry" (http://wiki.process.io/article/Develop_understanding_of_the_industry), you can see we included a Industry Focus field as process characteristic (see screenshot below). When you add or modify a process you can select an industry from a dropdown list. If you use the comprehensive search (http://wiki.process.io/article/SearchAProcess), you can search for processes in a specific industry. At the moment most processes are relevant for all industries. We are still trying to figure out a nice way to browse through the different processes and industries. I hope this answers your question. If you have a good suggestion on how to implement the industry focus in a different manner, please let us know! |
| Is there a Tips & Ticks section for converting XPDL | Usage | Is there a Tips & Ticks section for converting process models to XPDL. | You can find a manual on how to import/export XPDL files at: http://wiki.process.io/article/BizAgiExportXPDL |
| Prince 2 | Process Request | Does anyone has some process flows or descriptions regarding Prince 2. | |
| Sorting tree on overview page | Technical | Is it possible to sort the tree with processes on the overview page? At the moment the categories are shown in a random way. | We are using an special extension to show the tree (Semantic Treeview). The extension doesn't support sorting at the moment. We have asked to implement this feature in the next release. |
| What is the best learning methodology to use to train adult learners in business processes - to know them and apply them | Organisational | What is the best learning methodology to use to train adult learners in business processes - to know them and apply them | |
| Why do you use XPDL? | Other | Why do you use XPDL as data storage? What is the difference between XPDL and BPMN? | BPMN (Business Process Modeling Notation) is a standard developed by the Business Process Management Initiative (BPMI), endorsed by Object Management Group (OMG) and broadly adopted across the industry. But the BPMN standard defines only the look of how the process definition is displayed on the screen. How you store and interchange those process definitions is outside the scope of the standard, and this is where XPDL comes in. XPDL provides a file format that supports every aspect of the BPMN process definition notation including graphical descriptions of the diagram, as well as executable properties used at run time. With XPDL, a product can write out a process definition with full fidelity, and another product can read it in and reproduce the same diagram that was sent. |
